It is a measure of the relative body fatness to evaluate risk factors associated with obesity. It is based on weight (in kg) with minimal clothing and height (in metres) without shoes.

BMI is expressed as Wt.(kg)/ Ht.(in metres square)

BMI Categories:

  • Underweight = <18.5
  • Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
  • Overweight = 25-29.9
  • Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater
